Guest Dressed

Photography by Chris Warnes

The holiday season has Kate Nixon in prep mode, ready to pamper weary travellers.

A warm welcome for overnight guests can be as simple as a fresh snip of foliage or flowers (ideally something perfumed and nostalgic, such as gardenias or jasmine) and a favourite book or magazine by the bed for night-time reading - along with that guestroom essential, a good bedside lamp!

I love both planned and impromptu sleepovers, and believe thoughtful touches can leave a lovely and lasting impression on guests. For inspiration, think back to a favourite holiday or hotel room you’ve stayed in and allow yourself plenty of time to make your guest room superhost-ready.

Fresh ideas & easy updates

  • Clear a wardrobe or drawer section so guests can unpack and have a little space to call their own.
  • Pair a white fitted sheet with a coloured top sheet and pillowcases for a little extra personality.
  • Leave a lightweight duvet alternative on the end of the bed in summer, and a cosy throw in winter.
  • Consider window dressings for privacy and blockout.
  • Place a pretty bowl on the bedside table for jewellery.
  • Keep a spare charger in the bedside drawer.
